Evolution of Sex Chromosomes and Gynoecium Suppression in Plants

چکیده

White campion (Silene latifolia, Caryophyllaceae) is a classical model species for studies of sex determination and chromosome evolution in dioecious plants. Deletion mapping this revealed the presence two Y-linked determining genes—the stamen promoting factor (SPF) gene gynoecium suppressing (GSF), which inspired development classic ‘two genes’ dioecy evolution. We recently identified GSFY that encodes CLAVATA3 homolog causes suppression S. latifolia via WUSCHEL-CLAVATA feedback loop. Interestingly, WUSCHEL (SlWUS1) also sex-linked both SlWUS1 are located oldest part chromosomes, suggesting selection to prevent recombination between these genes may have contributed origination chromosomes species. The WUS-CLV3 pathway involved sexual differentiation kiwifruits melon, indicating plays central role monoecious

The Evolution of Sex Chromosomes and Dosage Compensation in Plants

Plant sex chromosomes can be vastly different from those of the few historical animal model organisms from which most of our understanding of sex chromosome evolution is derived. Recently, we have seen several advancements from studies on green algae, brown algae, and land plants that are providing a broader understanding of the variable ways in which sex chromosomes can evolve in distant eukar...

Sex chromosomes in land plants.

Sex chromosomes in land plants can evolve as a consequence of close linkage between the two sex determination genes with complementary dominance required to establish stable dioecious populations, and they are found in at least 48 species across 20 families. The sex chromosomes in hepatics, mosses, and gymnosperms are morphologically heteromorphic. In angiosperms, heteromorphic sex chromosomes ...

Sex chromosomes in flowering plants.

Sex chromosomes in dioecious and polygamous plants evolved as a mechanism for ensuring outcrossing to increase genetic variation in the offspring. Sex specificity has evolved in 75% of plant families by male sterile or female sterile mutations, but well-defined heteromorphic sex chromosomes are known in only four plant families. A pivotal event in sex chromosome evolution, suppression of recomb...

EVOLUTION OF DIOECY and SEX CHROMOSOMES

Why are there two sexes in certain species, instead of one hermaphroditic sex? Why are Y chromosomes shorter than X chromosomes, but only in certain lineages? I propose that differences between sexes are initially determined by differential methylation in nuclear DNA between females and males, driving Muller’s ratchet. Methylation of promoters suppresses transcription, including loci coding for...

Plant Evolution: Modern Sex Chromosomes

The first detailed map has been produced of a plant chromosome carrying sex-determining genes. The new data show that, in papaya, these genes lie in a quite extensive non-recombining region. This region is nevertheless a small part of the papaya genome compared with other male-specific genome regions, such as mammalian Y chromosomes.
